Tannisho wo Hiraku is an anime movie that was released on May 24, 2019. Adapted from the book Tannisho, the movie follows a young man and his Buddhist monk master as they travel the world.
Plot[]
In the early 1200s, during the Kamakura period, a boy named Hirajiro was born. Though he was born to a poor farmer, he was clever and resourceful. One day, he met a monk named Shinran and learned from him as he grew up.
Hirajiro, who left his home after chasing relatives who returned to Kyoto, was given the name “Yuien” and studied Buddhism with his friends and relatives. While studying, Yuien discovered that his old friend was in trouble, but found himself unable to do anything. In frustration, he began to ask himself existential questions: Why are bad guys saved better than good guys? Why do people live?
The true meaning of the monk's words that “every human being is a villain and there is no condition to be saved” will be revealed.[1]
